STEAM and the Power of Exploration in Lower School
Our annual Family Math night has evolved over the years and has become STEAM night. Lower School hosted record numbers of families and students exploring Science Technology Engineering Art and Math in a variety of engaging formats.
In addition to all of the hands on exploration provided by the Lower School faculty team, the Upper School Solar Car team also joined us, Upper School Librarian Mrs. Moore demonstrated the 3D printer with a completed dinosaur head, and the Middle School robotics team shared their robots. Across all of the activities and stations, students were challenged to try something new, and (in many cases) get their hands dirty!
As we look to next year and beyond, we are strategically looking at the best ways to boost our STEAM program and enhance the time our students have for exploratory learning and creation. As part of the process, we are introducing a “Makey Makey” Cart and an “Explore” Cart next year. The traveling Maker Carts will provide tools and resources for our students to create, build, and try something new. This will be powerful learning for both faculty and students alike. Our goal is to provide the setting for students to inquire, try, and solve problems along the way. This approach supports a growth mindset as well as the notion that there is not “just one right answer or way."
Many schools define the foundations of STEAM teaching and learning in the ways subjects are related to each other, problem solving, projects based learning, creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication. (Education Week) We have chosen to add a 5th “C”: compassion. This ties our teaching and learning directly back to our Mission and Outcome statements:
