Developing Global Leaders

The beginning of every school year is a fresh start and an opportunity to establish new “Hopes and Dreams” for each student and faculty member alike. As students and faculty set our yearly “Hopes and Dreams” (goals), I like to add a challenge for each classroom. This year our Lower School wide challenge is based on inclusion and looking beyond ourselves to help and learn about others. I’ve been meeting with classes and reading the book, What Does It Mean to Be Global? by Rana DiOrio. The devastation of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma have certainly made the topic of helping others more prevalent and meaningful.

There have been a lot of great questions and discussions around these ideas. First grade has been working on establishing a growth mindset and thinking about what students are currently able to do, as well as what they aren’t able to do - YET. First graders are also actively working on sprinkling kindness throughout the school day and at home.  In every grade we are continuing to practice being “bucket fillers” instead of “bucket dippers.” Have You Filled a Bucket Today? A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids by Carol McCloud is a great resource to demonstrate how to build one another up.

Our approach to Daily 5, math stations, and hands on science is all preceded by the foundation of daily routines and expectations that we have as a community. Lower School is beginning the year with joy in the daily routines and practices in the classroom. This sets the stage for transformational learning at every age.
